As a high school junior, the journey toward college begins to take shape. This year is crucial for setting the foundation for your future academic path. However, don't let this list stress you out, there is always still time! Here's a comprehensive to-do list to help you navigate this important time:

1. Create Your College List

  • Research colleges that align with your interests and career goals.

  • Consider factors such as location, size, programs offered, and campus culture.

  • Compile a list of at least 5-10 colleges you would like to explore further.

  • Look for my blog post on this

2. Run for a Leadership Role

  • Identify clubs or organizations that interest you.

  • Prepare a speech or presentation to showcase your leadership qualities.

  • Engage with peers and faculty to gain support for your candidacy.

3. Go on In-Person or Virtual College Visits

  • Schedule visits to colleges on your list to get a feel for the campus environment.

  • Participate in virtual tours and information sessions if in-person visits are not possible.

  • Take notes on your impressions and any questions you may have for future reference.

  • Apply to fly-in programs for low-income/underrepresented students! (look for my blog post on this)

4. Choose Teachers for College Recommendations (End of Junior Year)

  • Take note of which colleges on your college list require recommendations, and the number and type they require

  • Consider teachers who know you well and can speak to your strengths.

  • Approach them early to discuss your college plans and ask for their support. Many teachers prefer to have a lot of time to write a thoughtful recommendation

  • Provide them with information about your achievements and interests to help them write personalized letters.

5. Sign Up for the SAT/ACT

  • Research the SAT and ACT to determine which test aligns better with your skills.

  • Register for the exam well in advance to secure your preferred test date.

  • Plan a study schedule to prepare effectively for the test.

  • Taking the test multiple times can help maximize your score

  • Studying over the summer will provide you with the most time!

  • It's ideal to have your final test score by August of your junior year, so you can focus on college applications and can assess which colleges are safeties/matches/reaches

6. Write Your College Essay (End of Junior Year/Summer before Senior Year)

  • Start brainstorming topics that reflect your personality and experiences.

  • Draft your essay and seek feedback from teachers, family, or peers.

  • Revise and refine your essay to ensure it is polished and compelling.

  • It's ideal to have your essay written over the summer before your senior year so you can focus on writing supplements in the fall

7. Learn About Financial Aid

  • Research different types of financial aid available, including scholarships, grants, and loans.

  • Understand the FAFSA and CSS profile process and prepare necessary documents for submission.

  • Attend workshops or information sessions on financial aid offered by your school or local organizations.

  • Discuss affordability with your family

8. Get Advice from Seniors

  • Connect with seniors who have recently gone through the college application process.

  • Ask them about their experiences, challenges, and tips for success.

  • Consider forming study groups or discussion panels to share insights and support each other.

Conclusion

Your junior year is a pivotal time for college preparation. By following this to-do list, you can stay organized and proactive in your college search and application process. Remember to take it one step at a time and seek support from teachers, family, and peers along the way. Good luck!
