Working with Brooke

Beginning the Journey

Helping Brooke with her college applications was a rewarding experience that began in the summer before her senior year. As she prepared for this pivotal moment in her life, we took the time to create a comprehensive college list that aligned with her academic interests and career aspirations. We explored various institutions, considering factors such as location, size, programs offered, and campus culture. This initial step was crucial, as it set the foundation for her entire application process.

Setting Up the Common App

Once we had a solid list of colleges, the next phase involved setting up her Common Application account. This platform serves as a gateway for many students applying to multiple colleges, and I guided Brooke through each section, ensuring that she understood the requirements and deadlines. We meticulously filled out her personal information, academic history, and test scores, making sure everything was accurate and reflective of her achievements.

Crafting the Activities List

A significant part of the application process was creating her activities list. We collaborated on how to best present her extracurricular involvement, volunteer work, and any part-time jobs. I helped her articulate her experiences and responsibilities clearly, emphasizing her leadership roles and the skills she developed. This not only showcased her dedication but also painted a well-rounded picture of her as a candidate.

Brainstorming and Writing the Essay

The centerpiece of Brooke's application was undoubtedly her personal essay. We spent several sessions brainstorming ideas that would authentically represent her voice and experiences. I encouraged her to reflect on her journey, challenges, and what she hoped to achieve in college. Together, we crafted a compelling narrative that highlighted her unique perspective and aspirations. Through revisions and feedback, we refined the essay until it truly felt like a reflection of who she is. This collaborative process not only strengthened her application but also deepened our bond as she prepared for this significant transition in her life.
